What about length?  Do you need to tie a red flag to the end of your 


kayak or canoe if it extends past the back end of the car?

Revised NJ laws (1995) and I think perhaps nationally now, are that max length
of rack bars is 1 1/2 times the width of the vehicle, but not greater than a
lane width (whatever that might be...).  Also, an overhanging load can reach
36 inches behind back bumper before a red flag (I think at least 18 inches
square) is required.
