I attended the GLSKA Spring Rendezvous again this year. Again, I was an instructor as well as participant. The Rendezvous is the official season opener for our club. We get together and spend time learning, sharing, day tripping and generally getting reacquainted with old members and meeting new ones. I gave a rolling demo featuring 14 rolls (plus a couple I just couldn't get that day - too early in the morning for me!) as well as sculling and balance braces and a chest scull. I then helped with forward stroke, self- and assisted rescue and other instruction. Fun and the water was tolerably cool - surprising after such a long cold spring! John Winters offered the opinion that people watched my rolling demo for the same reason that folks watch stock car racing - they secretly hope for a crash. Since I didn't drown, I guess I left them disappointed. (He also suggested that I could improve my balance brace in a dry suit by farting! John... such a lovely guy... :-) The evening featured the band Freshwater Trade, who entertained us with old Canadian songs from our voyageur and sailing traditions, sung in both French and English. The following day we had several paddling trips and the one I attended was lead by Sandy Richardson to find a couple of shipwrecks in shallow water and snorkel at the sites. I took my relatively new digital camera and underwater housing and put together the following: http://members.rogers.com/michaeldaly2/GlskaRendezvous1.htm Mike *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
