I got a handful of requests for more information about my home-made thighbraces, enough to answer them on Paddlewise instead of backchannel. My answer has a delay of a week or so, because the weather was very nice in the Netherlands: Very hot for a couple of days, ending in an afternoon with a lot of wind. Ideal weather for a thorough test of a new boat: I've rolled it, drowned it, rescued it, paddled it, surfed it... No time to write about paddling, time to paddle! Anyway: I can easily handrol my new boat with my new thighbraces, so I consider them a complete succes. There were requests for more information, and that is hard to give. All the essentials are in my first message. The best I can do is give a sort of manual of how to build it. I describe only the left side. 1. Drill a hole in your chair, between your legs, as far forward as possible. 2. Find a quick-release mechanism, from the belt of an old bag, a backpack, a drybag or a PFD. Attach one side to the hole in your seat, the other side to a strap of about 30 cm long. 3. Attach a strap of about 1 meter long at your near your footbraces 4. Attach a strap of about 1 meter long to the side of your chair, where it meets the deck. 5. Sit down in your boat, in your usual position, lay one strap over your thigh and one over your lower leg, attach all three straps to each other with needles so that it feels solid and comfortable. 6. Detach all straps from your boat, take them to your sewingmachine and sew them together. 7. Reattach them to your boat. 8. Find some water to test the quick release mechanism. That's it! Two hours should do to build both sides. Straps and quick-release things can be bought in a place that sells needles, buttons and that sort of stuff. "Fournituren" it is called in Dutch, I don't know the English word. I can supply more information on request, but no photo's: I have no digital camera or scanner. Once more the answers will be delayed: Tomorrow I leave to do a week of paddling above Germany, in the Eastsea.
