On Wednesday June 5th (at 6 PM) Jim Bixler and I are giving a talk and demo
on kayaking support for swim races as part of the weekly Wednesday evening
kayaking program being run at the Downtown Boathouse. Jim is a kayaker and
triathlete who will give the perspective from both sides of the waterline.
Also I expect some kayakers who have done this support service in past races
will pipe in with their experiences and views.

We first will be going over on land key tips and insights on what is
expected of a kayaker in these races. Then there will be an on-water demo
with Jim in the water. To be shown are techniques for getting the attention
of a racing swimmer (they can't always hear or see you that well while
racing) and how to safely cut them off if they inadvertently are headed into
the danger of a pieer or seriously off the course. Jim will also demo how
swimmers have been instructed to grab on to a kayak's bow and how a kayaker
should proceed in "front-towing" the swimmer to safety. Kayaks will be
available to give you a chance to see how to work with a swimmer in these
techniques.

This year's series of swim races on the Hudson are listed on
http://www.nycswim.org

The Wednesday series of kayaking talks/demos in the Downtown Boathouse
program are listed on http://www.downtownboathouse.org/calendar.html

The Downtown Boathouse is on the Hudson at West St. equidistant between
Chambers and Canal Streets and near several subway lines. The website had
directions.

thanks,

ralph diaz
