A while back there was a discussion of Canadian rules requiring kayaks to
carry heaving lines of (I think) 50 feet or more. Curious to see how far I
could throw a heaving line while seated in my kayak, I dug out my old
Dragonfly Designs throw bag, which was designed for river rescues. The
farthest I found I could throw it on calm water was 25 to 30 feet, or about
1-1/2 times the length of my sea kayak. Since I figure I can paddle that
distance in a few seconds, I don't see much point in carrying a heaving
line, except possibly for surf rescues. Even then, I would have to get
mighty close to the person in danger to use it. I think I'll stick with my
tow line.
