Brian, There are tons of cool paddle opportunities in the Shallotte, NC area. In fact, the Brunswick County Parks & Rec Dept. printed a Canoe & Kayak Access Guide that I picked up a few years ago. You can call them at 1-800-222-4790. If, for some reason, you can't get your hands on a copy, email me back channel and I'll mail you an extra that I have. Just FYI, the Cape Fear River area just up the coast is gorgeous. There's a ferry from Southport to Fort Fisher, with a public put-in near the Fort Fisher ferry dock.
