Fontana is a beautiful lake. Half the lake is bordered by the Smokies and the other half (well, most of it) is bordered by the Nantahala National Forest. When I have visited, I camped on the National Forest side. A permit was required to camp in the National Park so might want to check that out. It is sometimes tough to find a flat spot to sleep unless you are camping at the mouth of a creek. The lake has lots of fingers and coves, the small mouth bass fishing is good in the lake. Eagle, Noland, Forney and Hazel Creeks all come in from the Park and are known for their trout fishing. You can get a good stretch of paddling from the dam to the Little Tennessee River or the Nantahala River. Put in at either the marina near the dam or at the Tsali Campground. Have fun! *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
