Postcard from the Adirondacks
July 8, 2002 Lake Abanakee, Central Adirondacks, upstate New York. Air
temps in the 80's, water temps in the high 60's, on the rise from the two to
three feet of ice cover during the winter, to peak in the 70's during
August.
The Adirondack Region is a six million acre park with 3000 lakes and ponds
nestled
between the mountains, so temps vary.

A fine summer afternoon -- the placid, clear, clean water reflecting the
vibrant emerald green of the balsam fir, hemlock, red pine, spruces, birch,
maple, cherry and beeches that hug the waters edge. Among the reeds and
yellow lilies;
scooters dart across the surface, small fish meander below, dragon flies and
darning needles
hover and dash, life is a buzz, punctuated by the plop of frogs launching
from their perches on fallen
trees. Gliding along, soaking in the tranquil beauty of the lake, when
before me a magnificent Golden Eagle silently takes flight. What an awesome
creature, its wing span over 6ft. across lifting it gracefully to the sky.
Ahhh, the wild -- forever wild -- every paddle, an adventure...

All the best,
Heidi Langley
