The following is what I am sending to all my Texas and Louisiana lists. We'd love to have any of you that want to come as well. We camp on the beach and just have a low key meeting. I have already heard from several people that they are coming, including Rafael Mier-Maza who built my lovely Performa and the Tabasco - a tandem that paddles fast and surfs like a dream. (That's it playing in little surf in the Memorial Day pictures.) Pack light - leave your wet suits and dry suits at home. You will want tarps of other sun shelters for midday. Do bring cotton so you can wet it down to keep cool. Surf Fest 2002 Calling all sea kayakers. Spend Labor Day weekend at Padre Island National Seashore. Paddle flat water or in waves, practice your surfing techniques, work on your roll, meet kayakers from all over Texas as well as Mexico and just have fun hanging out. This was the coolest place in Texas in 2000 and the driest place in 2001. We slept under blankets while the temperature was 109 in Houston and 105 in Corpus in 2000. We had NO rain all weekend in 2001 while most of the rest of the state was flooded or under a flood watch. Camping will be at Padre Island National Seashore (fee). Check out the activities, camping, and fees. (http://www.nps.gov/pais/) The first people down will find us a site about 1-2 miles down the beach. Others will try to save as much land for us as possible. The people who get there last, will camp in the midst of us. I plan to lead a Sunset Paddle out of Bird Island Basin either Saturday or Sunday evening. We'll paddle from about 5P to sunset and then come back for supper. I’m going to set up a private list, SurfFest 2002. If you are interested, please notify me and I’ll add you to the group. This will give you access to all new information about the weekend. For pictures of the original surf fest – see http://community.webshots.com/album/43508649pSxoyI See pictures of Paddle Fest, Corpus Christi last Memorial Day for more pictures of the areas we’ll be paddling. http://community.webshots.com/album/38511189CyzQvR http://community.webshots.com/album/37225074MRMcTa This is also a wonderful place to bring your family. They can swim, bike on the beach, hike on the beach and dunes, fish, sunbathe, bird watch and visit the nature center. They can also enjoy the museums and aquarium in Corpus Christi.
