Peter wrote a lot:

But I have some questions.

Which of the references cited deal with pulsed flow. In particular I noticed
nothing about dynamic stall?

Which of the references deal with pulsed flow with a starting vortex at the
interface of two fluids of differing densities.

Which of the references deal with maximizing total thrust at widely variable
and constantly changing angles of attack and flow direction similar to those
we experience in paddling?

None of the formulas etc. that Peter supplied seems to apply to these common
conditions of paddling.

Hopefully Peter can help us on this. It isn't very helpful to have a lot of
formulas etc. if they do not apply to the situation.

In particular the formulas aren't very useful when one assumes parameters
that may not apply such as assumptions that the actual flow conditions fit
the the biomechanics of the paddler(s).

It seems rather odd to me that the most extensive paddle testing both in
tanks, wind tunnels, and real life has led to low aspect ratio paddles even
though, as Peter tells us, it is obvious and has been clear for many years
that everything the racing people think they have learned is all wrong.

Could it be that the application of all this data does not apply to paddles
or is it possible thgat it applies but Peter has applied it incorrectly.
Maybe a bit of both.

Cheers,

John Winters
