Some time after writing that article I built a new, larger tank for testing paddles. I got different results. In consultation with some people at the National Research Center it was suggested that the tank walls were too close to the test samples which invalidated the tests. I am still not convinced that I have the complete answer on this one (or a lot of other things) but the tests in the larger tank would seem to be more reliable and suggest that narrow paddles do not have higher drag ratios. Canoesport Journal was no longer in existance to print a revised artilcle. I hope to update things once a new version of my book comes out someday.
