Thank you to all those who wrote back with thoughts on VHF radios.  I
also looked at the archive site on the topic.  

The tally pretty much came up in favor or ICOM M2A due to its good
reputation for dependability, submersiblity, and being able to take
alkaline batteries.   I considered splurging on the ICOM M15 but it had
the drawback of not taking alkalines which I wanted since I would be one
the water for a week.   The Uniden 985 seemed to be a dud with only low
level water protection. 

The ICOM M2A was on sale at West Marine for about $160.  

Despite being rated as submersable I am not sure I will wear it on the
PFD as some people do just incase it kills it.  I may keep it in a deck
bag.   Let me know if that sounds ridiculous.
