Jack mentioned a lot of good "visual" equipment.

I think, he misses one product, the fluorescine substances. Donīt ask for
the absolute correct name, Fluorescine is the chemical class and there are
small waterproof boxes on the market (like small key-boxes), containing a
few grams (under 10, !!) of powder. You carry it at your PFD or hang it
beside your whistle. Once poured into the sea, it behaves like oil, it
covers a huge amount of water surface and changes it colour into an
intensive green. This few grams cover over 100 squarefeet and stay over a
long period of time, waves need a lot of time to diffuse it. It is quite
cheap, about 10 USD (?) and one dealer ist Pains Wessex..
It is ideal for daylight and is a great help to be seen from airplanes over
long distances.

But best is, you never need to use anything of all the life saving stuff.
Paddle save and long,
Jochen
