Another advantage of the VCP hatch is that the cover is easier to remove 
with one hand, which is important if you intend to get at the contents on 
the water. I suspect this is one reason the Romanys have a VCP hatch for 
the day compartment and Kayaksport hatches for the other compartments. 
Kajaksport hatch covers seal well and last longer, but always seem to 
require two hands to remove.

My final plans for the day hatch is a VCP 7.5" hatch.  I made the choice
between the VCP and Kajak Sports hatches based on size.
