Farley Mowat's book was about a boat with a very definite personality. It
would seem that his desire to emphasize this personality, by referring to
it as a "who", implying a person, didn't survive the attentions of his
American editor.

It is not a difference of grammar between the US and Canada, just a
case overzealous editiing, obviously by someone who didn't read the book
very carefully.
