Sorry ..... I did forget to take varying dialects into consideration when trying to write out the pronunciations. Some people do put the emphasis on the first syllable of Tlingit. I am NOT an expert by any means. We learned key words and phrases only. I was once told that my pronunciation of words showed that I learned in Angoon, which meant that some people in other villages/towns considered it 'wrong'. About 'Xootznoowoo' (with underlined 'x') -- I didn't know quite how to describe the sound. Maybe I used the wrong description. It sounds to me to be very much like the way I was told to pronounce the 'g' in the German word for morning. (?morgen? I don't know how to spell it.) Maybe that isn't really a hard sound. gladys carter PS I've been interested in the ongoing discussion on alternative spellings for 'kayak'. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
