Not to mention the fact that it also helps to identify the bow and
stern of your kayak when it's floating deck-up.  Makes assisted rescues
go quicker, since the rescuer can immediately paddle to the bow.

It helps if everyone you paddle with uses some sort of similar
convention to identify bow and stern.

Other telltales are looking for the footpeg mounting bolts (closer to
the bow), or looking for a skeg box or rudder (if it's sticking up).

Usually, too, there's more rocker in the bow than the stern, but this
isn't obvious in some boats.
