Ralph,

I am now in the market for a new GPS. Saturday I was rolling with my Etrex
in a waterproof chart case, but it was not properly sealed. Once I saw water
in the case I went to shore and opened the battery compartment. It was dry,
but I left it open in my trunk hoping any humidity would dry out. The felt
temperature was about 102 that day.

The Etrex died even though there is no corrossion or other evidence of water
problems. I would try to do something about it but the unit is two years old
and the warrantee is only for one year. Do not trust their statement that
the unit is waterproof.

I've had the same problem on rare occasions and its not really a big deal as
far as I'm concerned. I've been using my Venture weekly, on my deck without
secondary containment, for over a year now with the only problems being
replacing the batteries every once in a while.
