Hi All,

My girlfriend and I are planning to drive down the Washington coast and
into NW Oregon for a week or so. We are bringing the sea kayaks so we
would appreciate any suggestions on favourite paddling spots along the
way. I'm looking for some moderate surf to practise in, and we'd both
like to find some relatively sheltered coastal areas to explore.

Any thoughts on places we shouldn't miss?

Eric,

Heading south from the Washington border.
South Jetty at Clatsop Spit is OK. couple hundred meter carry.
Seaside cove (south end of town) is OK tho the local surfers can be rough
on kayakers.
Indian Beach at Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach is good. Surfer attitude
is OK. Nice rock gardening N and S of the beach.
Haystack Rock (south side) at Cannon Beach is good. Cheap motels walking
distance from the break.
Shortsands beach at Oswald West is good, tho a long carry to the beach.
Consider a shuttle or hitch and paddle out to Manzanita as an option. Nice
caves and rock gardens along the way. No rest stops tho.
Cape Meares to Cape Lookout is great with lots of options. 3 Arch rock is
off limits till September 15. Netarts bay is great for beginners.
Cape Kiwanda at Pacific City is fine and great for beginners on a NW swell.
SW swells can be nasty but usually not in the summer. Great rock gardens
north of the cape. Great Brewpub at the put in!
Cascade head is nice tho can be tricky on an ebb with a big NW swell. lots
of rips around the rocks at the mouth of the Salmon River. Great estuary
paddle tho. nice caves and gardens north. Siletz bay is a nice estuary
paddle.

when are you going to be down?

I'm doing a surf class at Netarts/ Oceanside on the 25th.
