Dave said: <<< Folger Island is to be logged? Is someone nuts? The harvest will yield only a little quality wood, and a lot of very gnarled fiber. Outrageous!! Who would defile a scenic monument like Folger for a few thousand dollars of pulpwood? Doug, is this really true? >>> You were supposed to say, "Doug, say it isn't so!" To which I would have replied, "No." I just phoned Liz at the Bamfield Kayak Center. Apparently, we had our wires crossed last week. She thought I was heading out to Fleming Island the afternoon I left Bamfield, not hearing my words clearly enough. She didn't think I'd be heading to Folger so late in the day with the fog rolling in. I in turn assumed she heard me say Folger, so didn't think to question her why in the heck anyone would log such a small island, especially a sea lion haul-out. I'd meant to question her upon my return to Bamfield, but she was away for the Labour Day weekend, and hadn't returned my email of this week. I apologize to you and PW readers. I remember writing my log last night very hastily, thinking I should leave the logging part out until I confirm such a ludicrous thought. I knew you would be upset with the Folger threat. Liz did want PW readers that are interested to take action over the logging of Fleming, though. For myself, I'd like to find out how much is earmarked for logging. Anyway, the company had promised to do selective logging by helicopter earlier on. Liz had just found out when I arrived that the leased land was going to get the clear-cut ax. Not a great idea where ecoturism is becoming a mainstay and erosional forces are so prevalent, along with blowdown potential. Once again, sorry. For the most part, my posts are accurate and trustworthy. BTW, I'll be headed back to the Deer Group next summer with my family and the canoe, to explore Fleming and Tzartus (or as my wife remembers it: Copper Is.). I hope you are well enough to make it back out there some day too...fog, clear, or otherwise.
