Hi Matt,

> Stiener (Germany) apparently had an aluminum frame in their 1926 Alu model.

Steiner holded several patents on folding kayaks amd is the earliest commercial manufacturer of a complete frame in Duraluminium I know of.

http://www.faltbootkabinett.de/Museum/Typenliste_/Steiner/steiner.html

The term Duraluminium (Dural in short) refers to a Aluminium-alloy, containing about 4% of Copper, 0.5% Magnesium, 0.6% Manganese and traces of Iron and Silicium (Römpp Lexikon) and was invented by 1906 by Alfred Wilm.
The Aluminium ist rapidly cooled after heating to 500°C and then warm treated for a longer period, which hardens it (like the T6 in 6061T6).
The result is a much stronger Aluminium used in airplane construction of that time.

can someone translate: "2 mittlere Spanten aus DUR-Aluminum"
means the two frames in the middle of the boat are made of Duraluminium.
Wieser also used Aluminium.

Cheers,

Gerald
