I'm looking for some recommendations for break-down paddles for travel
and use with folding kayaks (Feathercraft to be specific). For
compact storage and travel convenience, I'm most interested in a
four-piece break-down model.

I know Feathercraft sells their own, manufactured by Nimbus. Other
recommendations I've received are Aquabond, Lendal, and Werner. I
find the Lendal of interest, as I can get a bent-shaft model in a
four-piece paddle. Of course, given an order in the next week to
ten days, I might (if I'm lucky) see it by Xmas.

FWIW, I paddle primarily with a 2-piece Swift (Mid-Swift) paddle. I
know they offer a four piece, but for reasons I'll leave private, I
would prefer not to purchase another right now.

As an aside, does anyone have any leads on compact paddle bags for
4-piece break-down paddles? I know Lendal offers one. I can't seem
to find any others, not anyone else who knows about any either. I
presently bags for 2-piece paddles from Salamander, and am VERY
pleased with them (as I am with every product of theirs I own). I
especially like the individual blade pockets (something not offered,
for instance in Werner bags), that keep the blades from chewing away
at each other during travel.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

We use only Lendal paddles here in Israel. Most have the bent shaft in
four-piece, using the Paddlock system. I know that Lendal will make them
in any length, which I'm not sure Werner will. Most are using the Kinetic
Touring blade, which has a great water entry. We find that the
carbon/nylon blade is the best for all-around durability, although if
lightness is what you want, you can go for the pre-preg carbon. One thing
about the Paddlock is it uses a small Allen wrench that has a tendency to
get lost. I would carry a spare.

As for the bag, stay away from Lendal's bag. I have one and it is
horrible. The problem is the zipper. It is a simple, small-toothed
zipper, that was always getting stuck. The metal pull thing eventually
corroded to bits from salt water. What they need, simply, is a big-toothed
plastic zipper.

You had two questions on 4-piece paddles:

1. Recommendations. My advice is to stick with a company whose bread and
butter is to offer good 4-piece paddles for its customers. And that is
Feathercraft. The company doesn't make its own but contracts out. It uses
Nimbus now but used Aquabound earlier. I have one made by the latter and it
works well.

The reason I suggest using a paddle made by someone who provides lots of
them is that they have solved the leakage problem. You have a potential
leakage problem at the snap button and takeapart connection at the blade
ends. 4 piece ones made by the two paddle makers above leak little if any
there. Those made by companies that are cutting you a 4-piece paddle as a
side business may or may not leak and some do.

2. Paddle bag for a 4-piece. Put it in with your folding kayak carry bag.
You can protect it in various ways there. The shaft pieces are pretty
strong in themselves. The blades can be protected from chipping by wrapping
them in something. Your paddle float is a handy holder for the blade or you
can wrap some thin foam or bubble wrap around them. If you intention is to
have a carry bag for a 4-piece paddle for travel, consider that you would
not likely be allowed on a plane with what essentially is a club.

Wasn't James interested in a bent-shaft model? I don't think Feathercraft,
Nimbus or Aquabound make such paddles, although I am sure they are good
paddles.

Ralph is certainly right here.

I'm not so sure about this. This summer I flew several airlines: American,
United, Lufthansa, and Alaska. I carried two, two- piece paddles in a
Lendal paddle bag. Although I was a bit concerned that what I was carrying
looked too much like a hunting rifle or shotgun case, and had written
"Paddles" all over it to assuage suspicion, I had absolutely no problem
bringing it on board. Not only was I not questioned about it, it did not
even count as a piece of hand baggage.

Best,

Josh

James,

I've got a folder and purchased a 4-piece bent shaft
Lendal (Paddlok system, carbon fiber shaft, nylon
Nordkapp blades) to use as my euro/travel paddle. I
don't use my Lendal often, but as far as euro paddles
go, this has been my favorite. Unfort., one of my
blades is frozen to the shaft, so my 4-piece paddle is
now a 3-piece. I left the paddle assembled last
winter and when I tried to take to take it apart last
Spring, it was stuck together. No worries, though,
b/c I don't like lugging my folder with me to an
airport, so a 3-piece works fine.

If you do get a Lendal, I bought mine with a group of
people I met through this list and recieved a BIG
discount on the paddle. It might be worth a try
again.

Hope this helps.
