My only problem with switching paddles wasn't with the different blades, but with the feathering. After about 25 years of using a 90 degree feather, I tried a paddle with no feather. Everything was fine until I decided to turn quickly. Without thinking, and using years of habit, I rotated my wrist and leaned back into a low brace with most of my weight leaning on the paddle. Unfortunately, without the accustomed feather, the wrist rotation put the blade on edge. There sure isn't much support for a brace that way! Half a second later I was wet and sputtering. I think that I swallowed half my body volume in water as I laughed at what a stupid thing I'd done. How about those of you who regularly switch feathers. If you get into an emergency brace can you think fast enough to orient the blade the right way?
