My wife laughs at me, but when we are on the road, I get paranoid about leaving the kayak on the roof rack in a motel parking lot. My answer was to buy 30' of 1/2" chain. I make a loop with a padlock and put it over the stern of the boat. I then run the chain under the car and take up the slack and make a loop over the bow end. The chain can't be pulled off either end, and if a baddie tries to monkey with it, the car's motion alarm goes off. I sleep well.
