Several years ago while paddling at night with a group in the inlet in front
of the Castillo and Bridge of Lions in St Augustine, FL, A large fish
launched out of the water and landed crosswise on my deck directly behind
me. If I hadn't leaned forward, I swear it would have hit me. Since it was
behind me, I couldn't see it very well in the dark. The force and weight
lifted the bow out of the water. The person paddling behind me swore it was
twice as wide as my boat. That would be about 4ft long. I always thought
it was the lightsticks we had tied on our boats' bows and sterns that
attracted it.
