The map measuring wheel thingie (aka opisometer) that list members helped me find a few months ago has been a useful adjunct in trip planning. I highly recommend one if you or your SO spends time measuring routes. Even water distances are easier with these devices than with rulers. I got mine for about $20 at acornnaturalist--not a plug, just a suggestion if your online retailer seems out of them. I chose one with the most metal parts.
