I think that the posts on this topic are good, but I would like to add a cautionary note to absobent pads. Don't forget to use direct pressure for approximately 15 minutes first for significant bleeding. This sounds obvious, but I can foresee someone thinking, while under duress, that it is overly important to cover the wound with something very thick and absorbent while forgetting to aggressively stop bleeding. Knowledge is the best tool you have.
