John, do you paddle feathered or unfeathered. Since you also paddle “Greenland” (and love your AT paddle) I’d have to guess you paddle unfeathered. I know several people who paddle unfeathered who really love their AT paddles (including Gerald Foodman on Paddlewise). But just in case you paddle it feathered I’ll relate my experience. I paddle feathered and find that the nice hand fitting oval and crank part of the AT shaft combine to put a lot of downward pressure against my thumb forcing open my non “control” hand when it is pushing. Could this be part of your problem? Is it your left thumb (if you paddle right feathered that is most affected)? I hold a paddle very loosely most of the time and use low-hand control (and those techniques can solve a lot of hand and wrist problems by themselves) but the above scenario still bothers me when using the AT crank paddle.
