Sure you can! I've had my hull planing on many waves, in the wake of
cargoships. While the hullspeed of my kayak is about 9 km/h, I've read a
topspeed of 18 km/h on my GPS on some occasions. Probably I've gone
faster, but every time I made the "surf of my life" I hadn't bother to
turn on the GPS.
