I had a Garmin GPS 12XL in which the internal battery failed after a year and I lost all saved waypoints and track points. (Garmin had received a shipment of bad batteries from a supplier.) They replaced mine free with a newer unit. Needless to say, I was very pleased with their service. BTW, newer Garmins no longer use an internal battery for data retention.
