Went to Corpus Christi to try our first production boats in the rough
conditions that we have frequently found there. Well… That sounds like a
pretty good excuse doesn’t it? We plan to spend New Year Eve with Ken Johnson.

My family Lety, Gus and Andy, myself and my friend and boat young engineer
Juan Luis traveled on Dec 26. Murphy took an earlier car and came in to
arrange things so that on 27 and 28 we had the most beautiful, sun shining
and calm waters that I have ever seen in Corpus.

6 brave paddlers got together to confront such conditions, starting at the
marina and making a most enjoyable 10 mile paddle where a lot of talking and
little racing, and a good roll exhibitions took place. The rolls show was made
by Ken with strong effective sweep roll, Juan Luis with sculling and pawlata
and you name it and Mark rolling with his Greenland paddle on both sides and
sculling as well. Scott rolled twice with flawless motion. I tried and missed
and Scott came in for an Eskimo rescue after which I did two more assisted
with my paddle float.

We did 10 miles, took some pictures under the Lexington carrier and went home
waiting for next day’s wind and waves.

Sure enough on Sunday wind picked up to 27 mph with 35-40 mph gusts and wind
waves in the bay about 2 to 3 feet, 6- 7 feet apart.

The test conditions were there and off we went. Took three Performa II and
Mark had his Mariner Kayak.
We tested our boats for weather cocking and lee cocking with front skeg up and
down when moving sideways. The results were very pleasing. The boats were
pretty neutral for all three riders, Ken, Juan Luis and myself. Still they
could be made to turn without problem from 90 degrees to straight upwind. The
front skeg works very well to help the boat turning. Outside the harbor we
went upwind for a while, turned back and started surfing back. Got some good
rides. Mark did great and reached the Harbor entrance first. In there we had
to go upwind again. Wind picked up and wouldn’t let us do more than 1-2 mph.
As usual Ken and Juan Luis made good progress and I stayed behind but
steadily. Mark was very clever and paddled close to the Harbor stones line
gaining good wind protection. We got together and exchanged data and agreed
that we have achieved what we wanted, happy to be sitting on a reliable,
stable but responsive resource when under the seat things move a lot. I
didn’t feel so well with any of our previous versions.

Happy New Year to everybody and keep enjoying the winter.

Best Regards,
Rafael
