For what it's worth,  Relatively inexpensive kayak loading and carrying racks
may be made from combinations of 1 1/4 inch, 1inch pipe and 1inch Diam. steel
tubing.  1 inch pipe will telescope (slide) into 1 1/4 inch pipe very nicely
and 1 inch tubing will slide into 1 inch pipe.  I have made and modified
several racks over the years using those materials with standard pipe fittings
(tees and els)   These  racks were for pickup trucks, so of course the use of
pipe etc. would  not be applicable to all kayak hauling vehicles. 





If any pickup drivers have questions regarding "how to", feel free to reply
