Since about a year I am thinking of paddling the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady)
in Burma. I have read some books (actual guides like Lonely Planet and
ohters, as well as historical ones) and bought some maps.
In the Internet I have found a lot of information but I found nothing
about paddling (and only very view information about the river itself).
We are some experienced folding boat paddlers, we would bring our boats
to Burma by plane. We would like to sleep in our own tents.

Our idea is starting the trip in Myitkhyla, (the origin of the Ayeyarwady)
and paddle down south of Mandaly, possibly further.
I am looking for all information that could be usefull, especially of
course paddling related information. I have read about "three narrows"
in the upper part of the Ayayarwady but no detailled info. As the river
is run by ferries (in the rainy season up to Myithkyla) it could be
possible to start there also in the dry season. Another starting point
could be Bhamo (the last station of the ferry in dry season).

We have talked a lot about travelling to Burma in principal because of
the political situation. Our conclusion was to got to Burma, travelling
on the river, bying our food etc. at the people could be a possible way
of dealing with those problems.

I would be very glad if someone could help us with information, personal
knowledge or even with hints on books or URLs.

Thanks in advance and excuse my English
Rainer

Madre de Dios, what a trip. If there's still a Raffles in whatever Rangoon is
called these days, and you make it there, hoist an icy Pimms cup to us poor
souls that can't be there. Audacious. I have no idea if your plan is
practical at all; but I sure like your style. You'll get good advise from
this site, pro or con, but the very best of luck to you, whether you go or
not.
