The Pawaletta Roll (I'm uncertain of the correct spelling) is the roll I was taught first when I took a course at NWOC taught by John Meyer. He taught me the roll in 10 minutes, and it was easy to adapt the technique to other rolls later. It is basically just an extended paddle roll, and to convert the technique to a screw roll, all one needs to do is gradually extend the paddle less and less, and speed up the process a little. Because the leverage provided by the extended paddle is so great, it is a very good first roll to learn. It also has a greater likelihood of injury to the shoulder due to the greater leverage. Don't let your elbows get too far from your ribs and your shoulders will be OK. I like to teach this roll first because it is easy to teach. It is also a great roll to use when rolling a poorly fit boat, a very wide boat, a boat with sponsons attached, or when one's confidence is low (like after missing 3 roll attempts due to some brain fart or other). *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
