Peter, I couldn't agree more with you about the safety advantages of a clean deck. Try doing a good sweep stroke with gear all stacked up on your deck. It interferes with the paddle shaft. My day hatch is set up just like yours with a VCP hatch that is tethered to the boat. I've never seen one with metal clamps.
