Mel,

I use 1/4 or 5/16 smooth braid polypropylene rope for my main load bearing
ropes in my tarp setup. The tensioning lines are either 1/8 inch parachute
cord or Kelty Triptease. I like the Triptease because the reflective cord
in it shows up at night. I carry 2-3 50 foot pieces of the larger rope and
a hundred feet or so of the smaller line in short pieces. I also carry some
sacrificial 1/8 line. By sacrificical, I mean line that I know I may have
to cut to a shorter length for a particular tarp setup. The heavier ropes
are also used to hang bear bags, tie down boats, for clothes lines. Like
Sam in the Lord of the Rings, I like to have a bit of rope about.
