I hear you! A lot of folks want to learn how to roll, but are impeded
by their coamings. Why do manufacturers build kayaks with such deep
cockpits?! One can build a kayak with a lot of volume for those who
dislike packing light, but the kayak can still have a nice recess for a
low coaming.

A big fiberglass chop job!!! :)

Actually, it is...but do you want to do it? If you do it yourself, it
will probably take 10-12 hours and $50. Have someone else do it, and
figure $3-400. Run a jigsaw all the way around the deck recess, drop
the coaming to the height you want it, cut the recess opening larger so
the new recess will be fair, and put on the Tyvek suit and start
glassing!

I chopped the ocean cockpit out of a VCP Selkie for a friend, and am
replacing it with a keyhole similar to the one in her Necky Looksha IV.
The completely new cockpit will take about 15 hours.

When that's done, I'm going to do the same thing I described to you for
your KS kayak with my woodstrip Guillemot 18. I built the deck too
high, and cannot balance brace the boat. So, I'm going to lower the
coaming and make the recess larger.
