Hi Nick, I second the Umiak as a boat choice. Both my kids used that boat with great success. It's also true that it needs flotation bags. My 11 year old son had great fun doing wet exits and self rescues with that boat, particularly during pool sessions (okay, so the water gun didn't hurt either for when he exhausted himself). The only issue was when it got too heavy, filled with water, for him to either empty or get it out of the pool. The only reason he isn't using it anymore (and it's for sale here in Minnesota but it's a bit far for you) is that he now has men's size 9 feet and they just don't fit.
