Dear Ari-- Yes, it's very true-- in Scandanavia. Scandanavia is a camper's
paradise! You can literally camp anywhere you please-- except somebody's
front yard. In Sweden, it's called "everyman's right." You're supposed to ask
the owner, if you can find him, and he's supposed to say "yes!"-- and they
do!! My partner and I paddled across the Baltic from Stockholm to Turku in
June of 2001. And in the Lofoten of Norway in July. However, on long trips,
it's still nice to find a hotel on the beach once in awhile (or with a pier
you can tie up to). "Hot Showers of Maine" ( a catalogue of hotels accessible
to kayakers) made our three-week paddle up the Maine coast a lot more
comfortable-- and it helped spare the delicate ecology of the Maine Islands.

Oh well. After washing for a week with cool seawater one can always
appreciate hot water! Here the local camping sites offer good possibilities
to wash your laundry and have an occasional (but quite important) hot
shower. Paddling can be cold, wet, ugly and dirty business sometimes!

I covered a 500-kilometer trip with some friends last summer at Baltic Sea,
from Aland Archipelago to capital Helsinki. Please, inform me if you are
returning to Scandinavia!

Cheers,

ARI
