I totally agree that you need to spend a few $$$ to get decent
binoculars. The first set of cheep ones caused plenty of headaches/eye
strain. I ended up with the Nikon Windjammer 7x50 about 10 years ago.
Although large, the optics provide fantastic low light use along with
excelent clarity. I think they were considered only splash proof but
mine have endured quite a few dunkings including one time of being
underwater for at least 10 or more minutes with out the slightest hint
of fog. Note that despite that abuse, I have always taken care to avoid
any contact with sand. Unfortunately I have not seen that model for
sale recently although there might have just been a name change.

Hi Folks,

I couldn't help adding a post to this thread.

Gotta spend some money to get good optics, but you don't have to spend
thousands.

Eagle Optics (they have a web site by that name) sold me a pair of their
birding glasses that have been truly great. I have the 8X42 Raptor.

While out birding, I've passed them to folks who are used to Swarovski's,
etc, and everyone has been impressed. I get a thrill every time I use
them. Waterproof and N-purged.

One serious dousing (way more than two hours last year (my Force-5 racing
sailboat and I got into some tail wind that was more than we could
handle)) left my first pair fogged and Eagle replaced them no questions
asked.

Happy paddling.

Bill O

I have a pair of Steiner Military Marine 8x30 ST binos that are built to be
submerged to a depth of 5 meters for 5 minutes. I paid $300. They are in
effect the little brother of the big Steiners issued to the US military but
are very equal in my mind. They fit easily in a deck bag. One hand covers
the entire bino except the eyecups. You would be challenged to find a more
rugged pair of binos in such a reasonable size. They are current issue to
German military snipers.

I truly don't know but I wear glasses and they work fine. I would guess so.
Can you tell I am a retentive type on the technical details? I think I
would have made the world's worst engineer. I generally fly with the "looks
good lets try it" attitude.
