Haven't followed this thread, so apologies if this is redundant. Bought an E-Trex a few years ago because if was classified as "submersible", using the "J" series standards. The Garmin name and West Marine's reputation encouraged me to buy it. It leaked and shorted during the first two trips --- not bagged. Returned it with a complaint to West Marine --- after getting it good and rusty --- for a refund. Garmin's position was that the electronics compartment meets the submersible standards, so it's "submersible". The obvious and acknowledged fact that the battery compartment latch was not even water resistant and the batteries would always short out was considered to be irrelevant by Garmin --- and, surprisingly, by West Marine. Truth in advertising seems to be more pliable for some vendors than for others. Refund for a cash purchase was provided by West --- eventually ---, but the lack of confidence in Garmin's truthfulness remains three years later.
