As previously mentioned, bullets will ricochet off water when impacting it at a shallow angle. If you remember the British movie The Dam Busters, you'll see that principle taken to a particularly spectacular conclusion. Round, cylindrical, sideways, or flattened from a previous impact; doesn't matter; if the angle and velocity are there they'll "skip" and go where ever they want. Very dangerous practice, looked down upon by almost every shooter. Waterfowl hunting is the obvious exception. When the Inuit hunt and shoot seals....they pretty much know, there ain't no one behind the seal and probably not even the horizon. If you find yourself in those circumstances, you're forgiven, fire away, but don't miss.
