Petersburg Alaska, where I now live, is at the north end of the Wrangel
Narrows and when the tide is ebbing and the north wind blows the surfing waves
roll! I am thinking of buying either a short sea kayak (i.e. a Looksha Sport)
or a river kayak to go play in the surf. Any recommendations?

Bob,

While a short sea kayak will do the trick in the surf (my favorite is the
Coaster) I think that you will find much more satisfaction in a whitewater
boat for more serious surf play. Not to mention the fact that you can usually
pick up a WW boat, used or even new, for a fraction of the price of your
typical sea kayak. In the surf a sea kayak is to a WW boat roughly what a WW
boat is to a high performance surf boat or waveski. I think even an old
Dancer would be more fun then a sea kayak in the surf. There is really only
so much you can do with a sea kayak in the surf. After that it just gets
boring.

Just my opinion, for what it's worth,

Scott
So.Cal.

Been awhile since I surfed my seakayak purposely. I have a Prijon Chopper WW
boat for that. The Chopper is not the ideal surfing boat as its round bilge
is not much fun if you are really interested in maneuvers and down wave
performance. On the river our group shares anxiety's: I don't have as much
fun surfing waves as they do but they can't keep up with me on flatwater
sections. Nor can they get as many waves at the beach as I do.

But, what it does offer is a long waterline for in and out ease to the waves
and a hellacious (sorry, Rev.) hull speed. I paid 300 bucks for used one and
it is a good generalists boat for down river and surfing. It is an easy boat
to learn alot of things in and though I'll add to the fleet with a playboat,
I'll keep the Chopper for all around use.

Just an opinion,

Rob G
