After mechanically filtering the water can't you add a very small amount of
unscented bleach to the water and shake/wait a bit? I thought bleach killed
everything.

My favorite filter is the Sweetwater. Easy to pump and easy to maintain.
Pretty much idiot proof.

Sweetwater removed its purifier from the market about three years ago. The
word was that while it worked in the lab, it didn't necessarily perform
equally in the field. Their press release is at
http://www.cascadedesigns.com/sweetwater/press_release.asp

They now offer a product called viralstop which is a stabilized chlorine
based product.
http://www.cascadedesigns.com/sweetwater/guardian_purifier_system.asp

"This system works fast in all water conditions and meets the stringent US
EPA requirements for Microbiological Water Purifiers. It inactivates 99.99%
of waterborn viruses and eliminates over 99.9999% of all waterborne bacteria
and 99.9% of common protozoan parasites such as Giardia and
Cryptosporidium."

Essentially add 5 drops of "viralstop" per liter of filtered water and wait
5 minutes.

The historic issues with chlorine bleach was it lost potency over time and
different brands had different strengths. While it appears this product
answers both of those issues, at $8 for 2 ounces of "Viralstop," you may
choose to just use more bleach to be sure.

Like most filters it is worthless on salt water.
