An index is a long "bump" or raised portion of a paddle shaft that helps to
orient your hand to the proper grasping position without having to look at
the shaft.  It makes a portion, say 12", of the shaft non circular. Some
companies offer them as an after factory add on. Some are heat shrink some
stick on. Can someone else do a better job at explaining this?  I took too
much Nyquil.  Brain cramping.
