I have thought a lot about sails, too, and after reading many links for
commercial sails and websites for how to make your own, I decided I could buy
another boat by the time I bought all the sailing stuff. What concerns me now
is the prospect of paddling against a strong wind. I had my first experience
with that last weekend, in the bay behind Grand Isle, the barrier island from
which Larry and Arthur launched. 5 of us in the paddling club decided to do a
short (mile or so one way) against a 10-12 MPH wind. It was very difficult. It
felt like it took an hour, but I imagine it was more like 30 minutes. The ride
back took a fraction of that time. I have concluded that I need some kind of
emergency anchor system in case the wind ever changes on me when I am out,
because the few times I stopped to rest I was pushed backwards by the wind.
It was fun, though, because I saw my first porpoises and when we met the
entrance to Barataria Pass (where Jean Lafitte hung out) we got into some big
waves and that was fun. Marsanne
