February 19, 2003 Crystal River, FL My wife and I are currently in Crystal River and volunteering in the Manatee Watch program, at the Crystal River National Wildlife Reguge. This means we have to go out into the reguge and paddle around the manatee sanctuaries, 2-3 times a week. Right now, they congregate near the springs (72 deg. water) at night, but forage during the day. As spring approaches they'll begin to migrate out for the summer. So if you want to see manatees, come sooner rather than later. Citrus County has a marked canoe/kayak trail near here, that runs from Crystal River down to the Chassahowitzka River. It appears to be mostly protected water. We're doing the stretch from Ozella to Crystal River tomorrow. Feel free to contact me directly if you'd like more info. Since then paddled in PA, VA, SC, FL, TX, AZ, OR, WA, UT. Been lurking here about 6 mos. (and really enjoying the exchanges.) Now, if I can just find someone to help me with my roll....cf) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Please send replies to: Cpf3_at_Escapees.Com *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - Any opinions or suggestions expressed here are solely those of the writer(s).
