When my friend and I both had motorcycles (speaking of death wishes...teenagers on motorcycles is about a potent mix as you can devise!) his Dad, an avid motorcycle rider, sat us down and told us in no uncertain terms - "if you ever get on your bike and you aren't the least bit scared, then get off and hang up the keys until you are". His point wasn't to ride nervously or scared - but to give the activity its due respect - a respect that would encourage you to ride defensively. When you ride nonchalantly you are a danger to yourself. I obviously haven't forgotten his talk with us - and I think it applies to paddling too.
