As a Southern California paddler I have noticed that when I travel north to colder water it takes a few days of paddling for my body to adapt. Rolling practice the first day typically results in ice cream headache and dizziness/disorientation. The next day the effect is reduced and by the third day it is typically not a factor. I have read about this same effect in others in a Sea Kayaker article about a rolling competition in Greenland. I have my own guess as to what is going on, but does anyone know specifically what causes this adaptation? It is not just a matter of getting used to it, because there are specific symptoms which go away, as opposed to just being able to put up with the cold.
