Jolie,

I have to respectfully disagree. While the "J" lean is what you want to do
while edging--leaning is also an extremely good technique for some
moves---BUT it requires support strokes at the same time. You can't do a
high brace turn, low brace turn, or even a proper sweep without leaning. At
those times however, your paddle will keep you from going over. You can also
paddle much better backwards (both faster and straighter) if you lean the
boat to each side and put the paddle down flat on the water. This way you
use your body weight to move you backwards instead of your arms, torso, and
shoulder.

The controversial Derek Hutchinson filmed a video called Beyond the Cockpit
and teaches a class by the same name that is all about using support
strokes. Done properly, they not only work, but are beautiful to look at.

Doing a broached landing in surf also requires that you lean. If you try to
do it while staying upright, you will capsize in a flash----don't ask how I
learned that ;-)
